Physical Exams in New York State
Did you know that you need a New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam if you plan on getting your commercial driver’s license? And more importantly, your physical has to be done by a qualified medical examiner. New York State requires the following CDL drivers have this medical exam to ensure that they are healthy enough to drive:
- If you are paid to operate a motor vehicle that holds nine to 15 passengers, drive this aforementioned vehicle more than 75 minutes from where you report to work and operate this vehicle for interstate commercial purposes (i.e. coach bus drivers)
- If you operate a motor vehicle with a gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, or gross combination weight of at least 10,001 pounds and you operate this vehicle for interstate commerce purposes (i.e. semi-trucks)
- If you transport a certain quantity of hazardous materials
Once you complete your NYS DOT physical, one of our physicians will fill out the required form. Once approved, your certificate will be valid from anywhere between three months to two years depending on your medical history and the medical examiner’s discretion. Please keep in mind, it’s important to be truthful on your paperwork about your medical history. For example, people with type-1 diabetes who inject insulin cannot receive their CDL.
